Meet Devo Athlete Lydia Russell

Be Murray

Lydia Russell is wrapping up her final year at the University of Arizona and enjoying her last season with the triathlon team there, while kicking off a year with the TTL Devo team. After winning the 2024 American Cup in Edmomton, her goal is break into the 70.3 distance as well as to qualify for U23 Worlds.

Like many of those who shift to multisport, Lydia encountered injuries from the repetitive nature of running. The wear and tear of the body that solely running can have, is especially hard on the many young female runners who race cross country at the college level.

Since transferring to Arizona to train and race triathlon, she has remained injury free and is aiming to qualify for U23 worlds this year.  She is also looking to break into the 70.3 distance and will be doing so in the TTL kit, with the heart of her team fueling and pushing her through each training session leading up to the race.

"Our team has a lot of energy, so there's no shortage of motivation"

When asked if being on a team added to any rivalries or competition, Lydia was quick to smile. The appreciation that she has for the women who sweat alongside her is evident. Training together as she completes her final university credits, the team pushes her to get the most out of herself and be a more competitive athlete, but also to take in the fun that the sport can bring when shared with friends.

"We're competitive with each other, but not in an unhealthy way....I'm glad to have my teammates around because they push me."

Lydia is looking forward to exploring middle distance races, but she really lights up when she talks about pioneering the sport for young women in the community.

"I take so much pride in being a role model to my younger teammates and always being someone they can come to when they are facing challenges. I hope I can be that person more broadly as I move up in the sport, not only being an example for those closest to me, but for girls and young women everywhere."

This or That:

Long ride or long run- LONG RUN

Tip for Newbie Triathletes:

"Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see progress for a little while, that usually happens right before a big breakthrough."

"It really depends on the vibe of the session but some faves are: Taylor Swift, The Hamilton Mixtape, Bad Bunny, or any Big Bootie Mix."

"My younger self- I always strive to be someone she’d be proud of."
