John Raced Super League Tri!
Representing TTL in one of the newest, fastest, most competitive forms of triathlon!
The 2024 SuperTri season kicked off in Boston this weekend as the first event of out five to occur throughout the Fall.
John was not originally scheduled to race this weekend, but was transferred in as the alternate for recent Olympic bronze medalist, Léo Bergère. Despite the short notice, John was ready to crush it!
But hold up, what's SuperTri?
A super short course format of triathlon: 300m swim, 4km bike, 1.6km run three times in a row without a break
Supertri’s new brand (rebranded at the beginning of this year from Super League Triathlon) was born from the desire to never stand still, to constantly progress. The brand aims ‘to inspire the competitor in everyone’. Winning in this form of competitive short course racing demands more than just ‘finishing the fastest’ - in SuperTri, everyone finishes fast. The gamified, point based, high speed format emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and intra-race tactics. Finishing in first place is not enough for a team to secure the win. The races unfold like a game of blackjack, the closer athlete’s push to their limit, the higher the stakes become.
Liz Barret, Deputy Editor at 220 Triathlon describes SuperTri races as gladiatorial battles for the digital age; spectators. The outcome can change in a flash, They are races built upon consecutive split-second actions.
SuperTri brings to triathlon what pickleball brings to tennis —a fresh, fast-paced twist on a traditional sport that’s attracting a whole new audience.
The Gist:
The 2024 SuperTri league features four teams, each composed of eight athletes: four men and four women. Out of these eight athletes, six are selected to race in each event.
The teams are: Brownlee Racing, Crown Racing, Podium Racing, and Stars & Stripes Racing. Each team is managed by a prominent figure in triathlon, such as Non Stanford (Brownlee Racing), Chris McCormack (Crown Racing), Tim Don (Podium Racing), and Parker Spencer (Stars and Stripes). The teams compete across five races, with a total prize pool of $1.365 million.
The teams must include at least one elite U23 athlete, reflecting the league's commitment to nurturing emerging talent in triathlon. The points earned by the teams and their athletes contribute to the overall standings, and the top team at the end of the season claims the largest share of the prize money.
How it Works:
It's fast! Athletes must go all-out throughout the entire race and maintain a high performance throughout the series to achieve the best overall result. SuperTri is a point oriented league - just because an athlete finishes first doesn’t mean they win. The point system adds a strategic element to the competition.
Points are awarded based on individual and team performances. Out of 16 athletes, a first place finish is worth 15 points, 2nd place 14, 3rd place 13, and so on. Teams can earn additional points through bonuses such as having the first athlete to cross a checkpoint, winning specific legs of the race, or securing the short chute - a shortcut that creates a slightly shorter route around the race course for those athletes who earn one. Points are awarded for the top 3 athletes as they finish each discipline as 4,2,1.
If an athlete falls over 90 seconds behind the leader at any point during the race, the athlete is eliminated.
Boston SuperTri Results:
It was an overcast but tepid day on Carson Beach in Boston's Southie. The rain dumped on athletes racing the Boston Olympic and sprint course earlier in the morning but had lightened by the noon start time of SuperTri.
John finished in 9th place, earning his team, Podium Racing, 7 points. Podium Racing secured the win in Boston by a single point over the Crown Racing team. Brownlee Racing followed in 3rd, despite Alex Yee finishing in first. Stars and Stripes sit in 4th with 46 points. John had a great race and thrived under the pressure of a fast pace.
It was a race won by the kick as Alex Yee surged past Hayden Wilde in the final stretch of the race, just as he had done in Paris a few weeks back.
It will be a quick recovery for the athletes as their next race is August 25th in Chicago. We are so proud of how John raced and we hope to see him tear it up this SuperTri season!
