When Zack joined the Devo team last year, he had just quit his job to chase triathlon full time. He proved at Challenge Roth that he has what it takes to keep up with the top athletes.
"Last year I was overwhelmed with quitting my job and being in a new environment...this year I am putting myself out there."
With committing to triathlon full time, Zack knows the dedication it takes and he's all in for every step of the way. In January, he arrived in Denmark to hone his swim skills, an area in which he hopes to see improvement, so he can climb up the PTO ranks.
"I felt like I'd reached the peak of my speed in the water and needed to do something about it. So instead of starting the year doing loads of volume, I wanted to reset and work purely on my technique. I'm hoping now that I am back from the camp, I'll be able to start to unlock more speed."
The trade-off for increased pool time meant that Zack had to sacrifice heading to a warmer climate, making biking and running challenging in the frigid temps.
"With no turbo, I've often found myself riding in conditions where riding at 300 watts for 5 hours is mandatory just to keep warm."
Despite the cold, Zack pushed through, knowing the experience would prove valuable this year; leaning into the warmth and universal language a good cup of coffee has after a hard session - no matter where in the world you may be.
We can't wait to see how Zack's focus and effort translate this season as he continues to make the sport his living. Proving it may very well be all about 'That Triathlon Life'...
